Overlong and overbloated, it's missing the key ingredient that made the book such an enormous success: the ability to put it down for a few hours when the ridiculousness gets too much and you want to take some time to reboot. Stuck in a cinema for two hours, the result is a bland mess that's difficult to get drawn into.

A competent thriller that doesn't really exceed expectations at all. Hanks is a great actor, but I don't think he's suited to playing the lead in a movie like this. Ron Howard, as always, provides perfectly competent direction that is completely unmemorable.
