A decent enough zombie movie. The African setting was certainly a refreshing touch. The best zombie movie of the year? (It says this on the poster) Rammbock was way better than this.
Sets up a nice little zombie survival movie in the first hour, but as more and more time goes on the movie starts to suffer. Too many zombies spread out, stupid decisions being made, and emotional range the lead actor just couldn't hit took me out of the third act. It's unique setting makes it watchable for zombie fans, but only once.
a horribly sub par zombie movie that deals with the quality issues by consistently featuring zombies spaced every twenty feet across the entire country of ghana. that aspect gets to be a bit frightening at times, until you realize that you end up seeing the same zombies repeatedly. if you manage to sit through the entire thing stick around for the credits, i laughed hysterically at seeing about 80 people with the same last name in a row.
Combining a zombie outbreak with the unforgiving climate and terrain of Africa... that's a smart combo. As such, The Dead was pretty refreshing in a genre where I thought I'd seen it all. I liked how the zombies truly felt omnipresent, and some scenes have actual tension. Rob Freeman isn't a charismatic lead though, and it's a shame this movie needed a white amurrican as a protagonist in the first place. Also, no zombie lions? Opportunity wasted!
