Good writing. Great acting.

While it never actively feels cliché, its well-worn story is ultimately its most prominent weakness, in that it's forgotten about quickly, disappearing into a stew of memories of similar films. The humor is hit-or-miss; the music nice but out of place; the acting more consistent. The climax is emotionally fulfilling, but all the meandering to get there is a bit tiring.

Why am I only lukewarm about this film??? (...Although, Shailene Woodley definitely gets Kudos from me!) ...I seriously don't understand why this film is getting Awards attention! ...I'd rather see TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, again!

I don't dislike this movie. In fact I think it did many things well. But I also think it was very safe. Safe enough for me to consider some of it unrealistic and wooden.

Really great film! George Clooney gives the best performance of his career. Nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. One of the absolute best films of the year!...

With all the awards buzz, I can't help but put this in the same boat as The Artist. While Payne's film had a lot more drama going for it, by the end, It never really hit me. There are some great performances as well as scenes (Clooney yelling at his comatosed wife, the moment it peaked for me) yet it just jogs around at its own pace and I just felt like shrugging my shoulders as it ended. Overall, I didn't find it memorable, insightful or all that engaging.

For a comedy I don't remember laughing once.

Hawaii is great and all, but the movie is just BORING. Enough with the broken family dramas.

This is the old "What do you expact?"-Question. And I expected too much.

Clooney has received great reviews, but the actress who played the older daughter stole the show. Enjoyed it, but expected more, given the raves I've read. Bring tissues...

Clooney always delivers, and it just so happens he and Payne are a pretty good fit. The only person that seemed to stick out was Rob Huebel. I don't know, I can't really sum up how I feel, but I can just say I enjoyed it, and I rarely poke and prod the person next to me as events unfold in the theater. "Oh my GOD, he did it!" and a thumbs up at a crucial point. I have to love a movie that makes me a dork in a crowded theater.

Solid Clooney performance (of course), and support do well. A few surprises and a lot of emotions tugging mean a satisfying little family drama. Good for couples and a lesson or two in there somewhere for everyone.

While it doesn't feel like a best picture, it is definitely engaging, thanks mostly to a good performance from Clooney and a great one from Woodley.

George Clooney is great in this.

Reminded me how much I like voice-over narration. Like 'Sideways', it blends seriousness and hilarity beautifully, the humour terrifically underplayed, deriving partly from the precise delivery. I'm happy to see Greer and Forster, both excellent, in roles like these and it's probably Clooney's best performance to date. Newcomer Woodley holds her own. Payne has a way with actors, that we know, and what more proof do you need than his succeeding in taming the ham of nature that is Matthew Lillard?

Not even close to being worth a nomination for Best Film, but still a nice one to watch. Not special, but Clooney & co lift it above the average, albeit only slightly.

A melodrama of zero originality and infinite cheesiness. Clooney is more awful than ever before. But Shailene Woodley is hot and I was stunned by how Beau Bridges, at 70, doesn't look a day over 40.

I'm basically a sucker for a really good dramedy, and this is one of the best in some time. Every so often a little on-the-nose with the narration, but the screenplay does an incredible job at getting you invested in the lives of the characters. Clooney is playing the best role of his career, with Woodley and Forster other highlights. Payne, as usual, finds the perfect tone and balance between the two elements of the film. One of the best of the year, and my personal pick for Best Picture.
