Summary: On a daredevil caving holiday six girls are trapped underground when an unexpected rock fall blocks their exit. Searching the maze of tunnels for a way out, they find themselves hunted by a race of fearless, hungry predators, once humanoid but now monstrously adapted to live in the dark and with murder and mayhem on their minds. (20th Century Fox)
awful practical lighting shakycam cinematography, basically indistinguishable characters, and a heavy reliance on bland gore and jump scares. the ending was just embarrassing. it is sort of scary, so points for that, but really, don't waste your time.
Reviewing: The story started nice, girls worked good together. The story was pretty simple, but I liked the clastrophoic mood. They built up a decent horror effects out in the darkness. The latter part went out of the cliff, though I liked the sound world.
Now imagine the same thing happened, but the protagonists weren't hyperactive high school girls... Wouldn't be as exciting. Positives here include the beginning, the hot cast, the ending, and the gore which all go a long way for me but don't quite patch all the holes, both literal and less so, in the story. And then there's the rabid albino monkeys.
this is like Aliens underground..the first movie i ever saw that i was more scared by the cave then the creatures...what a good little gore fest...great acting..great looking monsters...
Solid on every level. You'd thing it's crud till you actually start to feel the claustrophobic feeling of the film and it's setting. And to make things worst, mutated mofo's get in on it and try to chomp everyone up. Solid Thriller. Heck of an adventure. Don't miss out!
a strong horror film that successfully uses the darkness, and general claustrophobia. however, the introduction of the creatures slowly dulls the film. i found the ending unsatisfying.
The first hour lives up to the hype as you are kept guessing at what exactly is going on. There is a creeping sense of dread throughout and the cave atmosphere amplifies this. The film also does an excellent job of maintaining and elevating tension which unfortunately falls apart in the hokey last act which cops out with unlikely action heroics and obligatory gore. The added emotional back story between the characters was a well done touch and added depth to this competent horror flick.
badass, original horror movie. Great feeling of mounting tension and claustrophobia in the first half or so and a second half that just unleashes a thrill ride of pure glee for horror fans. thumbs up
