Very Capra-esque, it hits all the right notes perfectly. Not that I find that to be a bad thing, but in tradition of that, it is rather corny, while still never feeling forced, making the saccharine sensibilities much easier to swallow and actually quite effective despite its transparency. Noteworthy visuals as well.

A cheesy moralistic allegory, but directed with such stylistic flourish that it's a joy to watch. Walter Huston is fantastic as the dastardly Mr. Scratch, at once an appealing and unsympathetic character.

Simplistic moral allegory with an uninteresting lead. But the film makes up for that and more with an absolutely pitch perfect visual style combined with the screen presence of Huston, Simon.

This wickedly witty tale delivers some potent messages. Huston gives a dazzling performance.

It's alright... I would have enjoyed it a lot more if Jabez had displayed any other emotion about his newfound fortune than simply wavering between pride and panic.

It's an amusing little story (though I guess I wasn't supposed to find it funny), even though it paints Daniel Webster as some sort of saint when history shows he wasn't. Mr. Scratch is the highlight of this, especially in the ending scene.

Lovely little courtroom drama of the fantastic. One of the very few movies in which the Big Speech at the end actually works

Quirky and off beat drama playing on the theme of trading your soul with the devil. Very much of its time with some (hopefully) unintended xenophia betraying the fears of the early 1940's

The story is okay, but too moralizing and patriotic for my tastes... rather Capra-esque in its glorification of God, country, and good old-fashioned family values. And when the sole foreigner (Simone Simon) is cast as a representative of the devil, one wonders if there might be a touch of xenophobia lurking as well. However, the Herrmann score is wonderful, and the film has some truly incredible cinematography (the harvest dance scene is a masterwork of lighting).
