This ended up being better and funnier than I expected. It’s not as good as Borat (2006), but it was better than Brüno (2009). It was pretty much the same type of humour from Sacha Baron Cohen, so if you haven’t enjoyed his previous films, you won’t like this one. Lots of jokes intended to be offensive. And it did make me laugh a few times. It had a decent supporting cast. I wouldn’t call it some great comedy, but it’s a pleasant time-waster.

Yes, there are some elements that don't work, but it's rare to find a comedy that's this gleefully offensive and at the same time capable of making it funny. Sacha Baron Cohen hits the right line between pleasant satire and shock value, and there are more than enough laughs in the surprisingly sharp script to see you through to the end.

SBC says line after line of inappropriate and offensive things for 83 minutes. Go figure.

Trying to balance the line between offensive and acceptable this way results in some real misses on both sides, but there are enough good laughs to make it worthwhile.

I liked the subtext of the climax speech, but the more I think about this film, the more I see it as knowingly, maliciously depicting Arabs as cold-blooded, provincial, Israel-hating, imbecilic, homophobic pedophiles. As an Arab myself, an Arab to whom not a single one of those dehumanizing stereotypes applies in any way, this movie feels like a conscious message to society to see me as less of a person. I don't appreciate that at all. I also simply didn't find the film funny in the first place.

Not as many Jew/Israel jokes as I thought, so good for them, I guess.

The conventional meet-cute love story at the center of The Dictator feels like a bizarre concession to some nonexistent demographic that prefers its sick black comedy with a side of humanist sentiment.

i had hoped that without IRL bigots for his caricatures to be thrust upon, cohen might become more concerned with reflecting and provoking the everyday viewer. instead his lowest-common-demonitator schtick remains the same, assuming that his audiences are just as retarded as his characters. if he releases much more crap like this, full of obvious jokes about easy targets coupled with a self-congratulatory high five, that may be a self-fulfilling assumption.

Ed Norton sucks Bobby Lee's dick.

Oh man, the Munich Olympics wii game is..dammnnn. A few too many times there were dialogue gags that dragged on a touch. Only Baron Cohen knows how to publicise though.

It's not a wall-to-wall success, but when the jokes hit, they really hit hard

I enjoyed seeing Garry Shandling not have lines

Surprisingly funny. Highlights: The islamification of the soundtrack, the helicopter ride, pretty much everything with Efawadh and - most of all - the restaurant scenes, where Aladeen makes up fake names.

The conceit is stronger than the schtick, this film feels tired, even compared to previous Baron Cohen outings. The movie was just begging for a better plot, Baron Cohen builds characters that intrigue but fails to give them anything to do.

Much much better than expected.

I laughed enough to call this a decent comedy. What more do you expect?

The laughs were too few and far between. And Jason Mantzoukas steals every scene he is in. Give that guy a movie.

For every great joke, there's a painfully unfunny one. The overall premise is clever enough to make it a worthwhile piece of entertainment, but the unevenness takes it down a notch.

I thought this movie was great. In fact, I would say that it was better than Borat and Bruno. It isn't better than the skits of Borat and Bruno from Da Ali G Show, but it is his best character movie. I thought that this movie had a perfect blend of political satire and tongue-in-cheek racism that pokes fun at all the kinds of racial stereotypes there are. Baron Cohen is once again a genius at keeping a straight face while doing just the most hilarious things. The songs were definitely the best.

Unfunny.

It becomes clear early on what little attention has been devoted to the story, which is a merely a clothesline upon which Cohen strings together his purposefully offensive antics and occasionally sidesplitting jokes. Nothing to write home about but has its moments.

Not as good as Borat, but better than Bruno. There are some very funny scenes in this and SBC is great. Also the speech at the end was fantastic.

Unfortunately, for every good or funny moment there's at least one cringeworthy scene.
