There's a definite streak of humour there, but Van Sant's direction and photography is extremely plain, and the end result feels lacklustre and without any real drive.

Pretty funny short that does a good job of playing it straight. The concept is strange yet reasonable leading to some nice chuckles and useful advice.

Van Sant's dry adaptation of the Burroughs idea lacks the inanely unintentional hilarity factor that distinguished real-life informational/motivational vids of the '50s and '60s - namely One Got Fat and Girls Beware! Though admittedly humorous and casually clever, Van Sant's Discipline of D.E. lacks the raw comic effect of those others, and comes not equipped with much beyond its plain photography.

A very dryly funny take on a William Burroughs idea.
