This may be Murphy's last funny movie. It's not _Mr. Smith Goes to Washington_ (which is a bad *and* good thing), but it's entertaining, and has some interesting things to say about American politics

Con man-style takeoff on _Mr. Smith Goes to Washington_. The first two-thirds of the movie, with an accent on comedy, are the best.

It has a good initial premise, but the film never really goes much further than that, and as such it's very much a weak effort from everyone concerned. It doesn't so much skirt the line between oversentimentalised morality and weak comedy as much as dive headlong into both. Watchable, but ertainly not a high point in Murphy's career.

Cynical and sarcastic but poor of good ideas and characters. It also gives in to clichés too early to be taken seriously, even as a comedy motivated by Eddie Murphy's charisma, still solid, still reminding us of his great 1980s.

Not bad, but lots of easy answers.

Okay, this movie is not great. It's a barely-adequate remake of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, except that a huckster becomes a good guy, instead of a naive guy becoming a patriot. This was the start of Eddie Murphy's barely funny stage in movie life, where he's only about 1/10 as funny as the Eddie Murphy pre-1986.
