Stone masterfully recreates the late '60s/early '70s rock and drug scene, and Kilmer is perfect in the lead... but when it's all over you don't know very much more about Morrison than when the film began. The film's excesses also tend to parallel Morrison's.

Val Kilmer plays Jim Morrison as many people saw him, not as a rebel or an arrogant man, but as a troubled soul. A good film.

Could've been great if it wasn't for Morrison's vainglorious jibberish. Without dialogue I'd give this like a 90. As it stands, it's just a good experimental film disguised as a mainstream one. Composed beautifully by Oliver Stone and Robert Richardson.

the actors are perfectly suited for the roles, but the script is a total mess - Jim looks like some foolish junkie ... he's the god of rock, god damn it!

This movie is an inaccurate representation of Morrison's true character as well as being uninteresting. Jim Morrison was nothing more than a narcisistic drunk who abused women.

Not the greatest biopic ever but it's perfectly functional. Oliver Stone's take on Jim Morrison is pretty conventional and he lays it on thick with mysticism. This is still Val Kilmer's best role to date though. Meg Ryan was a bit weak and the film probably could have done with a less bubbleheaded portrayal.

There's only one way to approach a Stone biopic: who cares if it's historically accurate so long as it entertains. And this definitely entertains. Kilmer gives the performance of his life, and it powers the film through the inevitable lulls. The drunken rave energy is unsustainable over a full film. That said, it never bored me, it's just a little too weird at times. You'd think Kilmer would've learned Morrison's lesson, but besides premature death their careers/egos have followed similar paths.
