Hershey's gripping performance highlights this well-made, if exploitive, adaptation of De Felitta's novel, supposedly based on a true case. Way too long, it loses itself in the second half in an endless debate between psychiatrist Silver (who thinks Barb is going nuts) and a team of investigating parapsychologists. Worth seeing for Hershey and a handful of interesting FX.

I can't believe the scores here and everywhere, I can't believe number of votes, I can't believe I haven't heard about this earlier. It has great tension, fascinating script, amazing special effects and no easy explanations. Maybe last scenes in fake house at university were a bit over the top, but apart from that it was a perfect horror film. Definitely one of the best american films from the 80s.

Like poltergeist only not as good.

80 for the first half, but it falls apart. Such a naked inspiration on Poltergeist (and even Ghostbusters). The guitar riff is really unsettling.

Intelligent psychohorror which shocks with its sudden outbursts of violence. Hershey is terrific as the preyed on single mother.

It's aged well. It gives the viewer a little too much - as in, it ought to tease a lot more. I liked the camera angles.
