Sam Raimi's original "serious" effort that is all about offering a non stop nightmarish ride. Back in the early part of the 80's when the only horror was slasher Raimi's style was a breath of fresh air. Low budget but incredibly gory with special effects that were definitely ahead of its time.

This is not my favourite kind of horror, but it's the best of its kind I've ever seen. Extremely ambitious, well-paced, Bruce Campbell is awesome as always, and the makeup effects are quite cool. It's not quite as full of conceptually brilliant scenes as the remake, but the mood is more effective here.

promising debut from Raimi, but i found the demons more annoying than scary. some epic scenes though, and Campbell was made for that role.

Clever directorial touches and an imaginative storyline explain the film's cult following, but it's been wildly overpraised. Not-so-grand Guignol and amateurish acting dilute the suspense, except for one astonishing scene in which a girl is stalked through the woods by an unseen evil.
