Summary: Based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist marries three different scenarios into one extraordinary plot. A visiting actress in Washington, D.C., notices dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior and physical make-up of her 12-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, a young priest at nearby Georgetown University begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother's terminal sickness. And, book-ending the story, a frail, elderly priest recognizes the necessity for a show-down with an old demonic enemy. (imdb)

Eleven minutes of inconsequential extra footage and a few CGI cartoons, neither of which I will miss the next time I watch my creaky old VHS tape of the 1973 version. It's still _The Exorcist_

Well, I haven't seen the original, but this is good. Real good. Really there's not much to say about this film that hasn't been said before, but this is, for sure, one of the greatest horror film of the golden age of Hollywood.

The greatest horror film of all time. The acting is very memorable, particularly from Ellen Burstyn, the mother, Jason Miller, father Damien, and, of course, Linda Blair, who plays the unfortunate Regan MacNeil. One cannot give credit to Linda Blair without giving credit to Mercedes McCambridge who provided the demonic voice of the fully possessed Regan. She really gave the film much needed punch.

In horror less is always more, especially superimposed faces designed purely for jump scares. It messes up the pacing and looks lame. They did this version just to reinsert the spiderwalk but the extra stuff detracts from the original.

Actually this is the version I've seen, and the original is the version I've never seen. That aside, The Exorcist is pretty scary, with a few extremely disturbing scenes, and some powerful drama. The over-explanatory final sequences, however, ruin much of the uneasy, ambiguous mood of the film, making it both less frightening and less interesting.
