The 'actual footage' was the only part of the film that was slightly effective. When the 'actual footage' was 'damaged', it made for a very average, if not bad, film. I wanted to fucking see something!

I was amazed at this film. I never like documentary style films, but this one was great. The real footage they used seemed distracting until further on in the film, when the events were so dramatic that they would not be believable without real footage. It did seem convenience that the tapes distorted at the most crucial points but there have been successful tests of magnetic hover engines, and magnetism that strong would probably distort a tape. And Sumerian? That's interesting.

Striking and powerful film! As a film but more so as a documentary. I usually don't like documentary style films, but what this film does is show original footage often side-by-side with story footage neccessary to connect plot points and tell the story, but the original footage which is claimed to be all real is so shocking and amazing I have to give this film one of my highest recommendations.

It tried to get a sort of Blair-witch-esque feel going for it, but never really suceeded. I found myself not caring about any of the characters, and what was supposed to scare us just seemed really lame. The only reason to watch this movie is really the acting abillities of Mila Jovovich. Otherwise, it's pretty unconvincing.

Possibly the worst film I've ever seen. Being told 2000 times "this is real, based in true events, etc" doesn't make it real, nor scary, nor funny. Just plain tedious.

For anyone who has read about these alleged phenomena, this story is both predictable and ridiculous. The whole owl/alien thing, classy. Sumerian possession, WTF? The worst thing about it is the useless and irritating method of presentation, with two actors for every role, split frames, and a dramatization alongside the movie. Then insane stuff starts happening in the dramatizations and the film makes no attempt to explain it, despite having committed to fantasy already. Total crap.

[Spoilers] When I had just watched this, bearing in mind its authenticity as in question, it was a bad film that was still a fascinating failure for its blurring between reality and fiction. Then it turned out the authentic recordings were faked, making the film even more exploitative and trite, but also a gleefully subversive gem. Not only would William Castle be proud of it, but after seeing this documentaries are going to be more questionable in their legitimacy thinking back to this.

First of all, it's filled with lies, there's no true story to this. Secondly it's deeply poorly shot and cut together with its endless mockumentary clips rendering the film almost unwatchable and incoherent. Finally and most damningly a film supposedly about alien abduction is filled with posessions and psuedo-religious mumbo jumbo

The Fourth Kind is not worth a watch, especially if you've heard any of the "hoax" talk before you watch it (and you have if you've read this review). I don't think that matters though, because even if you're fooled, you'll want to learn more, and you'll discover the truth anyway, which will likely cause you to have an unfavorable opinion of this movie. There's just nothing here apart from being a "true" story to keep you engaged.

a badly directed and poorly acted, very creepy movie about alien abductions. split screens with `real footage` strengthens the sensation that everything described is real, but kinda stupid because you find yourself watching the camera footage instead of the movie itself.. circular shot of the owl was very interesting (whats with the owl, we still dont know)

Of course it isn't real, don't get so worked up about that aspect. In fact, if you follow the films own advice found in its closing moments ("decide for yourself," to paraphrase), keeping this (completely obvious) unreality in mind you might find the reality of the situation even more harrowing.

By now it's pretty obvious that the so called "real footage" is in fact played by B-actors and the movie itself is a Big fraud! Charlotte Milchard and english B-actor plays the role of the so called "REAL" abigial and does her acting pretty well and it made me kinnda frightened but after i found out it all was made up and no real whatsoever this movie is just a waste of time. Handicapped by its awkward combination of purported real footage and so-called re-enactments that plays like a bad pseudo-scientific TV show, distracting cinematography and a feel of being needlessly obscured, The Fourth Kind disappoints with every turn it makes beyond the hour mark. Really, the greatest thing about it is the circular pan of an owl.

They shot this movie in a style of Blair Witch Project. Which is, it seems to be real but it is not. But, there's a lot of confusion because of Milla Jovocih's guarantee of its real. Well I researched it a little, and i reached the conclusion of nothing in this movie is real. So, feeling a little deceived, without this "reality wall", I thought about acting, scenario, and directing. Because it seems like real if you haven't done any research, directing is fine. Though, scenario and acting is not

Trying to establish some credibility at the beginning the movie intercuts between seemingly real interviews and their re-enactions, scenes of hypnose sessions and the main actresses statement that "it's up to you what to believe". Besides they use the same weak stuff that you mainly find with alien, abduction and UFO followers like tapes which are of a very bad quality. Additionally, performances were mediocre only that I didn't know the story kept me watching it to the end.

Badly designed and manipulative pseudo-documentary, attempting to coherently explain the fictional side of sleep paralysis with tales of alien abduction in an Alaskan town. With a hole ridden story, poor pretence documentary scenes and some ugly editing The Fourth Kind soon becomes evident for the farce it really is. What makes me most angry about this is the lost potential. Some core concepts are primevally chilling and could have gone far in competent hands. Here they only provide minor jumps.
