Funny, but not consistently so, The Freshman suffers during the lulls where the gags are either not working or non-existent. Some of the situations simply take up too much valuable screen time to develop before the gags even kick in. A few scenes work well, including the football finale, and Lloyd is just too likable for the movie to tank. Good, but not great.

At its best when it's character driven. The party scene full of failed sight gags blows. Jobyna Ralston is lovely.

A lot of people consider this to be one of Harold Lloyd's best but I felt it came up a little short. There's some funny gags and the football finale is rightfully iconic, but a lot of bits are drawn out far long or just aren't that funny. Many of the situations are amusing at first but become tedious after a few minutes. The romance is also quite underdeveloped. I don't want to rag on it too much... as far as slapstick comedies go, it's far less annoying than most. I just expected more laughs.

only interesting at very wide intervals, i had expected more from harold lloyd, so if you have to choose watch some buster keaton instead. there was definitely potential here, and lloyd pulls it off well, but the writing and directing is lacking for anyone who expects a good laugh.
