Pretty great comedy/action fluff with the amazing Keaton, of course, as the star of the show, performing physical feats with ease but still appearing vulnerable in the process. This may be, for all intents and purposes, a glorified stunt show but, man, what a show!

Not as laugh-out-loud-until-you-cry-funny as some of his other movies can be (if seen in a crowded theatre, mind you), but a beautiful, cleanly told, inventive and authentic looking civil-war comedy with some beautiful, inventive, gags performed with Keaton's general disregard for life and limb...

Although I've watched this film with an indifferent music theme (pretty weird for a comedy film), especially ''the bomb scene'' was hilarious.

What Keaton achieved way back in 1926 is still the Gold Standard for consummate moviemaking. The production is indeed flawless, the gags both funny and jaw-dropping. The plotting even has an ingenious dual chase / role-reversal element that had my brain pleasurably reeling as I watched a real train crash and burn. How this was filmed is anyone's guess. I'm just glad it was.

Quite nice-looking and all (the restoration is absolutely flawless), but this is a rather messy and unfunny film that without subtlety (or tact, really) produces awkward gags about the civil war, the military, and love.

Oh my word, the stunts are dangerous. The train chase bookends are packed to the brim with impeccable timing and astonishing stunts. I laughed in amazement as much as in humour. The story's quite lovely too (even though we're arguably rooting for the South), but hey, it's not the story that will stick in the mind. God, those stunts!

2nd film of my Keaton marathon. Some scenes of brilliance, the majority was on the slow, boring side though. The sheer scale of the movie is impressive (the amount of extras, destruction of trains, etc). Keaton's expressions were so beautiful in their blankness, so much emotion conveyed, you can truly understand why he's called the "Great Stone Face".

Definitely had its moments, and Keaton's stunts were extremely ballsy and at times jaw dropping, but I really didn't find the picture much too exciting, or humorous.

While I was frankly underwhelmed with it as a comedy, The General is an outstanding adventure/thriller. Keaton is one daring son of a bitch. Very enjoyable, and holds up well even by modern standards.

An action/comedy from 1926 that puts most (if not all) contemporary efforts to shame? Why yes, yes it is. The train chase sequences are really exciting, and it's entertaining all-over.

I was expecting cool stunts and a lot of slapstick type humor but was surprised to find that it is also incredibly well made. Great tracking shots, good editing, great music. Buster's stoneface is possibly the best it has ever been and goes with the film perfectly. The train scenes are some of the best stuff ever filmed.
