This started off in a promising way, and I really thought it might end up as a nice romance between two lonely people. Instead, the writer decided to shove a series of poorly conceived political speeches down our throats, with scene after scene of characters telling each other (and us) what is important. Sermons are for church, and this ain't that. No thanks.

Took me a while to get into, but by the end there was a nice development to it. The people who are saying it gets overly preachy are probably just assholes (as extreme poverty and the "casual holocaust" are very big issues) so I wouldn't take their opinion too seriously. Bill Nighy was almost too awkward in the beginning, although I did grow to enjoy his performance and Kelly Macdonald is, once again, great.

Liked it until the end because idealism of English politicians serving patriotic purposes of director -or producer?- do not fit the rest of the film. But a good script and performance of Nighy carries it.

Has its share of flaws, and can be very uneven at times, but it is still a worthwhile film for some food for thought and for a nice story of love between two very different people.

The most uneven movie ever. The first half is great, the last is downright awful.
