Summary: A bounty hunter (the Good), a gangster (the Bad) and a thief (the Weird) match wits and many, many bullets in a quest for a mysterious treasure map in 1930s Manchuria. Over-the-top shootouts and chase scenes highlight this Korean homage to the Spaghetti Western. The cast includes the three biggest movie stars in Korea.
Kim captures much of the spirit of the spaghetti western while not feeling too much like straight homage. The action sequences are elaborately crafted, but unfortunately are often so manically edited that it becomes a hassle to watch. And we usually end up right where we started. It tends to feel like treading water at times. Also, only "Weird" seems to have more than one personality trait. Still, the film is a lot of freewheeling fun, has a few surprises, and doesn't take itself too seriously.
Cinema craft operating at such sublime highs of both technical virtuosity and sheer enjoyment, that I'm left with very little words to describe my feelings towards it, other than two: "astonished" and "overjoyed".
Very esthetic and that is pretty much all. The movie should last a 3/4th of its current length. Then it would be intense and breathtaking. Way too long and too slow. My friend confirmed that a lot of the jokes were lost in the subtitles :(
A well paced, action driven, nonstandart movie. There is a nice balance between the leading characters and all three do a nice job at delivering an exciting performance. Entertaining watch for those who are willing to overlook the plot holes.
Remarkable for its set pieces and action editing - tons of great tracking shots here, especially the first and last sequences. The stylized period production design is colorful and fun, and thankfully overwhelms the murky attempt at politics. The plotting's a huge letdown, as is typical of this type of overdone SE Asian madcap comedy, and the film is unfortunately stretched to accommodate it. But the three leads play to type nicely, even if the twist is totally unnecessary and the end's a dud.
The action sequences (and there is loads of 'em) in this action packed Korean tribute to the classic spaghetti western are all well executed, with the ridiculously over the top 20-minute chase scene towards the end being particularly memorable. Kang-ho Song delivers a very amusing performance and the film manages to entertain throughout it's entire 130 minutes which is pretty good for a western (eastern?) which doesn't exactly break new ground plot- and character-wise.
Good, tight, action film with pretty good characters, solid acting and great setpieces. The story is silliness, but generally enjoyable up until an eye-rolling reveal at the end. Fun & very amusing though.
As I'm a big fan of Leone, East Asian action films, and interwar era history, this film seems tailored for me. It's very gimmicky but doesn't disappoint, there's fun all the way with some amazing action scenes. The setting is perfect for a Western. The Eastwood character is great (although he goes out of character once, by lamenting Korea's lack of freedom - a cynic like Clint would never loan his coolness to an idealist cause like that), but overall the protagonists could have been done better.
This is like watching two different films. The beginning is intriguing, the middle is good for martial arts fans but will bore others, and then the end gets intriguing again. So I can't give it high marks overall, but would still recommend it for those with an open mind and a tolerance for a wide variety of movie styles.
Kim Ji-woon has really proven himself as one of the best Asian directors out there, with "Akmareul Boattda" being one of the best films of 2010 and "The Good, The Bad, The Weird" tied for best of 2008 along with "Martyrs". Just like last years Tintin, this is everything Indy 4 should have been and so much more. Sporting some fantastic all-round acting, some of the best action set-pieces I've ever seen and an amazing soundtrack, this is just more evidence that the best films do come from Asia.
A genuinely fresh action movie. This is more 'Hollywood' than most Korean films, but somehow not any worse for it. The action sequences are astounding, the casting superb. It is intense, violent, funny and pretty epic, which is a fair list of accolades. If you're looking for a Western with a twist, this could be just the ticket. Highly entertaining.
Colorful, energetic, entertaining. Might be a bit long, but I enjoyed myself throughout thanks to the gorgeous visuals and (at times) awesome music. That final chase scene was just concentrated chaos and adrenaline.
