Malkovich is outstanding but his talent higlights the mediocrity of everything surrounding him. The 'main' character (Tom Hank's charmless son in an embarrassingly nepotistic turn) does little more than wander along aimlessly, taking away screentime from the man whose name is in the title.

It's surprisingly involving, and Hanks Jr is an impressively laid-back comedic lead (and definitely one to watch). Blunt makes an impressive love interest, and Malkovich provides a nicely balanced performance as a washed-up magician with diva tendencies. In fact, the only real complaint is that the plot occasionally drags the viewer down blind alleys with little payoff.

A sweet picture about "doing what you love"; not exactly breaking new ground thematically but still possessing a certain charm that overcomes a few poor directorial choices. The real elephant in the room is Colin Hanks, whose stilted, uninspired performance repels sympathy in a role that demands it. It's telling that his best scenes are with his real life dad - somehow in the presence of such glaring nepotism that lost motivation gets found in a hurry. Hanks family holidays must be fun...

John Malkovich is great in the title role and Colin Hanks is also good. I really enjoyed this film. I did not realize that the movie was based on a real person before hand. The story is an interesting showbiz tale.

a charming movie, howard is a proud, great man and the story is an interesting and entertaining one. there are plenty of big names all playing their part fittingly and well. it's too light-hearted to be truly amazing, but it does end up being a nice flick.

While Malkovich plays Buck Howard to perfection, neither the story nor the character is particularly compelling. Hanks the younger also fails to astound, he plays the yet to be inspired artist a little less elegantly than it has been done in the past. This reminds me a lot of another Play Tone movie, That Thing You Do, but these characters lack the wit, and this script lacks the depth, of that comparable piece.

An "amazing" disappointment... With all respect to Tom, please pursuade your son to reconsider his choice of an acting career, before he causes himself further embarassment...

I liked this movie quite a bit. Malkovich brings it as always and is truly a treat to watch. It's not the best movie but it truly kept me entertained throughout with an amusing and fun plot.

I needed a little more whimsy to the characters and/or story.
