Duryea is at his drunken arrogant best, and Hughes is scrumptious (can't believe she never became a bigger star), although her character is a real piece of work, as they used to say. Also lots of fun noir lines. But Stroheim is miscast; I mean, he makes a dandy Nazi of course, but watching him laugh and joke and fall in love strains the credulity (it's like you've tuned in to some warped and surreal sitcom). Bob Dylan fans take note: Hibbing is mentioned several times throughout the proceedings.
