traffaut breathes no life into this script and his character follows suit. it's not actually that often that i find subtitles a chore, but this movie does it.

Truffaut continues the trend of decent-but-underwhelming films from the latter half of his career. The subject matter is dark, but Truffaut seems to distance himself from it, there's a rather dry and uninvolved tone throughout. I don't know what happened to Truffaut in the early 70's, he just kind of lost his spark. Not that this is a bad movie, far from it... but it's hard not to contrast it with the earlier masterpieces and wish there was a little more oomph to it.
