I appreciate action/thrillers that attempt to deal with serious themes, rather than just rely on explosions and thrills. This is one such film--dealing specifically with death. It's a film that would excite serious college freshmen, or even smart high school students. As a thriller, it is quite predictable and not very exciting--with the notable exception of the plane crash, which is excellent. (probable score: 67)

This movie takes itself too serious, while being so predictable. I wonder if those wolves would really take so long to pounce. Probably not, but then the movie would be over way too soon.

Enjoyable survival thriller, if you manage to ignore how far it is removed from reality. Characters are like something removed from comic books. Neeson continues his journey as an action movie star, and his character is always the same type of silent tough guy. It's a shame that the whole plot of the movie can be told in two sentence summary.

While at times it tends toward shallow cliches, this is a standard thriller raised to something that works both as a survival thriller and as a meditation on death. Neeson is perfect for his part.

Unexpectedly harrowing. This film will make you feel fragile and vulnerable, but in an oddly warm and comforting way, contrasting with the stark, blustering surface. There's a draining emotional depth to it that really stays with you, and that's the core of the experience. There's some rough spots in the script that are holding it back from being something truly special, but as it is, it's a very powerful work. A definite career highlight for Neeson.

The film's opening images rocked me to my core, deftly establishing a piercing portrait of a broken man amid a desolate world made up of ex-cons, fugitives, drifters,... dripping with existential misery. Makes you almost forget you paid 10 bucks to see a bunch of ravenous, CGI wolves as it slowly but surely descends into a mediocre, in order of ascending paycheck survival thriller. I could recommend the film based on the first 30 minutes alone but feel less enthused when considering the latter.

a few moments of genuine chill; the drowning scene sticks out in my memory. the rest is just Nihilism For Dummies, and indicative of the 21st century's annoying obsession with spelling out in capital letters the cynicism that's pervaded the disaster and horror genres for decades. getting sick of neeson's washed-up hardass meets dignified sadsack routine at this point too, even if the tragedy involving his wife provides a certain level of authenticity in this context.

This film alludes to a lot more than it actually delivers. The claustrophobic cinematography effectively heightens the suspense, but when you take away the theatrics there just isn't much character left to work with. I would have appreciated a study that went beyond stereotypical values to find something unique in the situation, but this is just a repackaging of standard thriller tropes with a bit of northern exposure.

Relentlessly bleak 'monster drama'. Heartbreaking even though some of the characters are made barely thicker than a cardboard. Hokey way of dealing with the poem and the way of addressing itself to the bar scene early in the movie and it's got its share of corny dialogue. Gets better and better towards the end with some very memorable and introspective scenes.

Wow, I was not expecting that. The Grey stands as one of the most emotionally riveting films of the year, if not the decade so far. Neeson is incredible here, and his co-stars are able to keep up with him as well. There is more to The Grey than a simple story about men versus wolves; it is a film about men and what we will do for the women we love. For, despite the fact that there is not a single female character other than in flashbacks, the survivors continue solely for their love. Watch this.

I don't want to live in a world where this movie was the "Liam Neeson punching wolves" flick that some people expected from the marketing instead of the film we got. The cast is uniformly amazing and this is probably the best performance I've seen from Liam Neeson. This is a tense, heavy film. It's not about wolves and it's not about punching them. It's a frank confrontation of death, and one that will stick with me for a long time.

I honestly thought this movie had a lot going for it but it continued to make stupid logical decisions. The wolves in general look bad, with few exceptions. The group whittles down slowly until the least interesting person is left with Neeson. My favourite scene was when one of the group decided to give up and Neeson just stood there without saying a word. The type of response he probably gave to the script.

A remake of The Edge with better acting, cinematography, sound effects and the lack of a contrived romantic betrayal. The inevitability of death pulses through every crunch, breath and howling wolf, reminding you constantly that you are vulnerable and hopelessly weak among the forces of nature.

The beginning of the film was pretty mediocre, relying far too heavily on voiceover and appearing way too heavy handed in establishing Neeson's character and environment. While this film had some strong moments, the plane crash scene is particularly effective, I felt the script could have used some more polish and logic.

The only thing that is good in this movie is the use of animatronics and some nice visuals of British Columbia where it was shot. The movie is as predictable as it can be and tried to make it up with the scene towards the end after the credit. The movie had a lot of scope to be better than it really is.

The first half hour of this is, for lack of a better word, chilling. You genuinely believe Neeson is a broken man thanks to his emotional performance and the plane crash is one of the best scenes of its kind. Then it gives up. It's like a really talented crew shot an excellent short film and then Hollywood tacked on an extra hour and a half. The script is poor, the tension is non-existent and the CGI wolves look like they were pulled from Twilight. Still, Neeson DOES punch a wolf in the face.

The plane crash was astounding. So what you get here is an artsy, introspective movie about a bunch of guys stuck in the cold being hunted by wolves. It's actually pretty terrifying sometimes, like listening to the wolves as the men stand in darkness with only a fire protecting them. It's pretty gruesome, doesn't bullshit, but is genuinely touching and emotional. It's shot beautifully and it sets it above your average Hollywood flick. Plus the ending is awesome.

This may be the best male oriented movie about men being men that we're ever going to get. No guns, no car chases, no muscular actors in sleeveless shirts posing for the camera. Just lots of men with beards crying in the snow. I've been waiting for this kind of movie my whole life. It's not perfect, but I find the fact that it refuses to indulge in any of those God awful action tropes so exciting.

i find myself in a bit of a conundrum here. basically, whats happening is all bullshit. the wolves' behavior, how the group fares in the wilderness and not to forget the rope-jump across a cliff with tied sweatshirts...yeah right. on the other hand i really liked the visual style and those quiet, subtle moments when neeson was thinking of his wife and such. it was shot nicely and somewhat gripping and gave depth to the otherwise forgettable characters. hard to judge, this one.

While quite unrealistic and filled with small mistakes that could had easily avoided. I still found myself enjoying it due to some great themes within the storyline, some beautiful and atmospheric landscape shots that help set the tone perfectly.
And the wolfs while not exactly acting like their real life counterpart still came off as scary, brutal, menacing and bad-ass.

The beginning was excellent, and featured a scene that put me on the verge of tears (I'm no macho man, but movies don't have that effect on me very often). It declines a bit once it goes to the woods, but the poorly done CGI wolves didn't grate on me that badly. The ending, the atmosphere, and great performances from Mulroney and Neeson easily outweigh any issues with special effects.

The beginning is pretty great, bringing the claustrophobic fear of the unknown that Alien and The Thing did so well. Unfortunately the third act abandons all subtlety to get to the ending it wants and brings down the film a bit. It's still very good overall featuring some truly great moments (plane crash was stellar).

For a survival flick, the movie is fine. The characters are interesting enough, and how do you not find yourself engrossed in a plot like this even if you’ve seen it or read it fifty times? The film-makers do a good job of communicating the cold misery through which the characters trudge, so good that it made me miserable myself just watching the journey.
As a treatise on humans’ approach to death, it’s kind of weak and especially shallow.

The beginning of the film promises so much and sets such a beautiful melancholic tone. Unfortunately it suffers from Hollywood ADD and becomes a cliche survival story of men versus nature. In some ways you can view this as a remake of Jaws. Another story of man vs nature vs his inner self. Liam Neeson doesn't wither at the camp quality of the setup but dives right into this role with emotional earnestness which is amazing considering the laughable cgi killer wolves. See it for Liam.
