The film is schlocky entertainment at best and bad at worst, but the book is one of the most famous pieces of feminist literature to come out of Canada, so read that instead.

Interesting take on the dystopian future story. It's far from being perfect but good enough that it makes me want to read the novel it's based on.

Though not a very skilled adaptation of Margaret Atwood's masterwork, this film is oddly memorable. It sticks in your head; it is not the main cast, though Faye Dunaway is impeccable; I think, rather, there are moments where the imagery of the novel is finely rendered [such as the scene where the Handmaids attack one of their own in front of a row of hanged criminals], and these stick in the memory as all great dystopia should.

An exellent interpretation of an amazing story. There are some flaws in the representation of the story, but as a story overall, well put together, and excellently casted.

Damned interesting piece of work that's never received the attention it deserves. Socially oriented sf is more of a grownup's kind of thing, and since the US's culture is more of a 12-year-old's than a adult's, well... you figure out the rest of the story. This story is still intriguing, and helped along by a terrific cast and one of the old guard of the German filmmaking community (of all people)

I hated having to read Margaret Atwood's TERRIBLE prose in high school English class, but this adaptation of her novel about a bleak future is actually pretty good. Duvall makes a wonderfully slimy fascist and the story has a few unexpected twists along the way.

Boo to nonsensical character behavior, and a setup that can't decide if it wants to go for plain old fiction or satire. Yay for the unique premise, the innovative Ryuichi Sakamoto score, and the performances. A note-perfect performance by Richardson.
