An embarrassing, incompetent train wreck. Zooey Deschanel and Mark Wahlberg turn in two Razzie-worthy performances. This is seriously some of the worst acting and writing I think I've ever seen in a blockbuster film. "We can't just stand here as uninvolved observers!" is an actual line from the movie. Damn. Furthermore, the concept is very stupid, and the execution even worse. M. Night Shyamalan has ruined his career, this time for good.
The Happening has an implausible but half-decent basic idea, but it's more ironic the entire film could have been written by a plastic house plant. The acting is for the most part horrid, the directing is unimpressive and the script is absolutely terrible. However it provides some unintentional hilarity with some of the worst delivered lines I've ever seen, even Whalberg provides more than his share of the stinkers. "Blast... I'm talking to a plastic plant. Wait... I'm still doing it." LEAVE NOW
A supposed thriller that at no point in its running time remotely approaches anything resembling tension or suspense. By the final 30 minutes you're just hoping it'll end soon so you can go have coffee and forget about the whole thing - which, thanks to a laughable plot, horrendous acting, coma-inducing pacing, and zero climax, is not that hard to do.
I must say, Shyamalan really knows how to make crappy movies. His only good movie was the Sixth Sense, since then it has been all down hill. The movie really didnt make any sense. The story was just pathetic, this movie is worth the miss.
Some of the premise is interesting, everything else is absolute trash. I've never been fond of Walberg but it's almost as if there's some hidden plot element that explains exactly how an actor could get every line of dialogue wrong. It's all beyond me.
Not bad. Biggest problems were an open ending and no rationale on what caused the crisis. The acting was fine and the storyline works well as an epic flight by ordinary people.
I refuse to believe that this isn't self-aware. Not even Shyamalan could write dialogue this atrocious and NOT be joking. Definitely up there with "The Room" for best worst movie.
