A subtly powerful drama of life in a Georgia town, where the deaf-mute Singer (Alan Arkin) touches the lives of a diverse group: a bitter veteran (Stacy Keach), a black doctor who hates whites (Percy Rodriguez), and a young girl whose home he boards in (Sondra Locke). Sentimental, sometimes overly so, but redeemed by unanimously fine acting: Arkin is beautifully subdued and unshowy, and Locke is moving and endearing; Chuck McCann is excellent as the simple-minded deaf-mute Singer cares for.
