A gripping, intense film with fine performances from all, especially Connery and Andrews.

Sean Connery in one of the great performances. Dark, difficult and perfectly made. Connery was 100/100 here. Watching this subtle, moving, perfect performance, I can help but think of where Connery could have been without the double-edged sword of James Bond.

An starkly realistic war/prison drama from one of America's finest filmmakers, jaw-droppingly directed and acted. The tension builds exponentially to create a prolonged, ever-escalating, gut-wrenching climax.

Excellent.

Sidney Lumet has now directed two films I would call perfect in every technical detail. The narrative didn't completely have me hooked in early on but just wait, just wait.

Lumet's confronting military prison drama contains exquisite direction that is matched by uniformly brilliant performances. From the beautiful opening extended crane shot to the intense hand held barking close-ups, this is a joy to behold. Lumet's talent for extracting amazing performances give us Connery's best. Davis, Bannen, Hendry also shine, though Andrews outpaces them all. The striking scenes of dissent and masterfully choreographed extras almost as memorable as the dynamite finish.

Powerful. One problem: British actors bark at each other and much dialogue is unintelligible to American ears (though if you can make it through the first reel, hang on).
