An utterly bizarre and equally fascinating picture. Never loosens up on the weird and the excitement. Quite the movie experience.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Gather the family to watch this on Christmas morning. The kids'll stop whining about not getting any presents AND they'll lose faith in all religious institutions!

I've never seen a film try so hard to be profound and meaningful before. It's pretty sad in all reality. And no, the imagery isn't stunning, it sucks. Seriously, if something is made that is indented to be viewed on drugs that right there is a huge red bullshit flag. Go fuck yourself Jodorowsky.

Where does one even begin? The intertwining symbolism and perceptions are weaved together so intricately by Jodorowsky, that your brain has no choice but to melt out your mouth. The imagery is stunning beyond reason, and there is constantly a beautiful use of colors.

Every bit as trippy and bizarre as it is often claimed to be and you can also add to that humorous and visually brilliantly composed. At its best for the amazing first half hour or so as we follow one guy on an aimless and mostly wordless journey through all sorts of bonkers brilliance. The introduction of more characters, more dialogue and a goal for the characters to work towards all got in the way of me fully enjoying the hallucinatory madness, but still it was definitely great.

Like most of Alejandro's works, this film is a visual and mental treat. My only gripes with this film are the way he weaves his philosophies into the storyline. It's almost as if he assumes the audience won't "get" what he's trying to say which I'm sure was fine in the 70's but comes across as patronizing today. Definitely worth getting your hands on.

Despite its cult reputation, this is far from the bizarre genre film it is painted as - it's a legitimately serious take on spiritual enlightment, one which filters its up-front ideas in a barrage of transgressive images and symbolism together with pinches of humour and intentionally surreal images. It is continually in danger of collapsing in on itself, but it manages to become a unique and successful work entirely by itself.

It's not often I would excuse a lack of coherent depth or a bare-bones story that makes little use of its proliferation of absence, but The Holy Mountain is the rare exception. It's simply too beautiful to look at, and there's absolutely no desire to stop watching. I simply wanted more, more and more of the unrelenting tsunami of bizarre visuals. It's an amazingly engaging film if you have the right taste, and as someone who did, it refused to let me go. A certifiable cinematic experience.

"What Jodorowsky doesn't seem to realize though is that without some understandable meaning, even this incredible imagination can get boring... The times that you do grasp some kind of meaning or message are far outweighed by all the nonsense and lunacy, the crackpot pretentious 'wisdom', the pointless grotesque visuals, and the mescaline or LSD experiences that you feel you're going through when watching this phenomenon of a movie."

Imagine Roman Catholic imagery were the severed penis of a bull. Now imagine being slapped in the face with it for about 20 minutes. Now imagine a mish-mash of mystic imagery, starting with tarot and alchemy, but containing enough recognizable images to offend about a half-dozen religions, imagine that as the severed penis of a camel. Now imagine being slapped in the face with that for about an hour. Congratulations! You no longer have to see The Holy Mountain!
