An almost entirely dull affair, but with a fair number of memorable scenes, scenes with the lost potential of being iconic. I guess I just don't really get into these early horror films based on familiar stories (Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Dracula, etc)

Lon Chaney makes for one ugly hunchback, and the irony of the woman who hates Esmarelda so bitterly is a touching piece. As PeaceAnarchy said, there isn't much character development and Quasimodo is just another face in the crowd (albeit a memorable one).

having already seen the phantom of the opera i looked into what else chaney had to offer, this being one of the ones held in highest regard. i was terribly disappointed, while his make up work is pretty decent, i really feel like i may have wasted another ten hours on my dvr because of that damned marathon.

To the film's detriment there's not much focus on the titular hunchback and in general everything is spread to thin. The narrative still holds up and there are some really good visuals, but there's not enough character development to make the film's key scenes meaningful.
