A stylish, moody film marked by an excellent script and expressive poolroom photography. Paul Newman, George C. Scott, Piper Laurie, and Jackie Gleason all give wonderful performances that go through intertwining, emotionally tense ups and downs. This movie is host to some of the most memorable characters in any movie, and I can't recommend it enough.

A cool motherfucking film, but also relatively boring with little connection between the themes of poorness, the romantic relationship, and the game itself, two out of three are starved of drama. Sports some good acting, steady characterisations, and nice cinematography.

Masterful; one of the bleakest and most cynical movies I've seen. Paul Newman is absolutely stellar as the embittered Fast Eddie Felson, who has been emotionally devastated and manipulated by George C. Scott's corrupt stakehorse. The black and white photography lends this a dreary, noir-ish nightmare quality. There's a great sense of resignation and defeat throughout.

The Hustler is a classic movie and like most oldies it hasn't aged that well. All of the actors do pretty good job but sometimes the story doesn't seem to go anywhere.

Very enjoyable, especially the photography during the pool games. Rossen offers us a variety of angles on the action, often incorporating the pool table lighting within the frame. This adds to the claustrophobia of Felson's circumstances, for while he has great talent, he has no means of making anything of himself without the invasive and dehumanizing help of others. George C. Scott and Newman are the standouts in this excellent drama.

Excellent. It's so great to see some real craft from screen actors. From that standpoint, Piper Laurie's work--especially the party scene--is top-notch. And having grown up with the Jackie Gleason Show, it's great to see him do something he can really sink his teeth into.

Solid but a bit overrated. I guess I'm the only person in the world that prefers 'The Color of Money' to this.

George C. Scott is a real gem in this movie, and Paul Newman can never let you down, although the love interest in this movie is a quite disappointing actress. The plot is gripping, but it is carried by events rather than characters, and that is what holds this movie back from being wonderful.

good story, bad ending!

A wonderfully crafted tale about lonely, flawed people operating in a world where even if you win, you're still a loser. Ostensibly a film about pool, this is given extra depth by the interplay between the characters, each of which is working their own angles, not entirely sure of whether they are the hustler or the hustled. Much bleaker than I expected it to be, but that's fine by me.

Pure perfection.
