Summary: Charlie is on his way to the USA. He wins in a card game, puts the money in Edna's bag (she and her sick mother have been robbed of everything). When he retrieves a little for himself he is accused of being a thief. Edna clears his name. Later, broke, Charlie finds a coin and goes into a restaurant. There he finds Edna, whose mother has died, and asks her to join him. When he reaches for the coin to pay for their meals it is missing (it has fallen through a hole in his pocket). (imdb)

I don't like it when people get kicked in the ass in these movies. It's supposed to be hilarious, but it looks kinda painful to me. It's the only cartoonish violence that rubs me the wrong way. Have you ever been kicked, for real? It fucking hurts!!

I haven't really liked Chaplin in anything except THE CIRCUS and MODERN TIMES. Keaton's lovable underdog appeals to me much more than the sometimes stupid, sometimes crazy, sometimes downright douchey tramp. I just don't root for this character, but in smaller doses like this, he's a little more tolerable. The gags here aren't great, but they're not bad. Most of the boat stuff didn't do much for me, but the entire restaurant scene is actually quite enjoyable.

While this does have its funny moments--Charlie on the rocking boat, the craps game, and Charlie trying to pick up the coin in the restaurant--its the exquisite nature of two other scenes that really make this film great. First is as the immigrants arrive in New York harbor, clamor to the side of the boat, and then look out as they pass the Statue of Liberty. Second and equally effecting is the sequence in the rain, as Charlie uses a magnificent close-up to depict he and Edna in love. Beautiful.
