Not a bit earnest. Absurd and funny.

It's alright for a 1920s French drawing room picture. The only problem is that the script is a bitterly sarcastic Victorian satire.

Not as good as the 1952 version of this Oscar Wilde play, alas.

Manages to transform a hilarious screenplay into an utterly unfunny, unremarkable romantic comedy.

Lacking the venom and class-consciousness of the stage versions, but Wilde's script is good enough that even stripped of all that, there's still a charming, servicable comedy underneath.

Typical American flick. It was practically ruined by the "improvements" over the original, genius play. I think the music was the worst part of it. What makes Hollywood types think everything should go accompanied with a jazzy orchestra blasting in every transition?

Oddly uninspired and botched attempt at modernizing the play; it focuses much more on the playful, farcical elements than the '52 version, yet it manages to somehow be (a lot) less fun. Firth was good, and Dench. Everett, however, was very disappointing and Witherspoon was simply dreadful in an important role. A huge disappointment.

No disrespect to the great Oscar Wilde, but this was like a really flatly directed stage play. Boring fluff for middle-aged film snobs.
