Georges Méliès revisits the idea of a scientific voyage to fantastical places, based on a play by Jules Verne (writer of A Journey to the Centre of the Earth & Around the World in 80 Days, et al) - Méliès produces another imaginative & humorous little film but I don't like it as much as 'Voyage to the Moon' which I found more iconic & charming.
Many ancient films actually look better as time goes on. This is not one of them. The primary point of interest is how primitive all this stuff is, compared to what we 21st-century film buffs are used
Mostly filmed theater, so save for some impressive early effects, the sets and hand-coloring it's all rather uninteresting.. I prefer "A Trip To The Moon" which is shorter, and less sophisticated in terms of effects, but ultimately the same film, less boring and so, more entertaining..
What the fuck?! The film is severely lacking in closeups, the editing sucks, the color looks like it's hand-painted, and the acting blows more than a prostitute at a tuba convention. Who the hell directed this crap?! >:(
If A Trip To The Moon was twice as naively zany and incredibly hilarious this would be it. There's some genuine comedy here too, not just unintentional hilarity. "They waste no time on their way to the inn," the narrator calmly states as their carriage comes bursting through the inn wall. The dry wit here is remarkable, and the fainting woman is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life.
Yes, it feels essentially like a remake of A Trip to the Moon. But I like this one a bit more. The sets are more lavish, the effects are more interesting, and the overall journey is more exciting and funny.
