There were good aspects of this film, especially the scenes revolving around the two main characters, but everything else is pretty bad. The supporting characters are all one note, the few details that the film uses to set up the conclusion make it predictable, and most of the scares are cheap fake outs. There's a core of a good film in there but this isn't it.

Ti West is just doing his thing with no care for what's in vogue in horror, and I kind of love him for it. Here's a horror movie, populated by characters who genuinely feel like real people, and the scariest thing about it is its keen recognition of how we sacrifice our youth at the altar of dead-end jobs and shitty television. It's not scary, exactly -- that climax is pretty weak -- but it is haunting as hell.

Ti West continues to make great, character-driven movies that just happen to be horror films. The sound design is really phenomenal.

I just don't know. It was sort of creepy, due to the sound design (if you can, watch it with headphones or a really good set up) but otherwise it was trying too hard to be different from everything else and ended up just being the same - if that makes sense. It isn't the revolution in horror all these 4 and 5 star reviews I keep reading were talking about, I have no idea where that came from. I suppose I've seen too many films to just not know whats going to happen, perhaps ruined it for myself

Focused a bit too much on being indie and not enough on being coherent. Random characters with unconvincing motives listening to canned obscurity when they're not walking slowly through the dark. Rinse and repeat. On the other hand, the film makes a remarkably good use of sound (or the lack of it) to build tension, and I have to admit I flinched a few times during the last act. Add to that a cute-as-a-button Sara Paxton and you have...I don't know... A decent enough movie...I guess.

The Innkeepers is all buildup and little payoff, or putting it in another way, all the good the film does in its first two thirds is undone by disappointing last third. Ti West could teach other horror makers a thing or two in atmospheric tension to create the suspense, which unfortunately is the only thing his film does well. It sorely lacks the last act punch of The House Of The Devil. What it has instead is a wafer thin plot, few good scares, and a rushed denouement.

Strong beginning, and Sara Paxton is adorable, but its climax is nowhere near as strong as House of the Devil.

For a rather weak plot this film had a few good scares and some good atmosphere. I do have to say that without Sara Paxton's remarkably good performance I think it may have been a flop. Not great, but the lead actress made it enjoyable.

as with house of the devil, great atmosphere and a good lead actress, but pretty thin on story and with a disappointing climax. i like that ti west is out there doin his thing but i think it might be time to let someone else step in and write his screenplays for him.

Its budget is visibly pretty low, and it's not exactly the most well-crafted horror flick out there, but this is unabashedly old-school and provides more than its share of kicky ghost story fun. So many horror filmmakers these days neglect to imbue their films with atmosphere and personality, forgetting that these are the elements that make the scares stick. In THE INNKEEPERS, the scares stick. Also, Sara Paxton is really, really cute.

Wow. What an unnecessary movie. Seriously, it brings nothing new to the table and apart from some scenes that look like they might lead to something suspenseful (they don't) there isn't anything original, exciting or memorable about this. All that time and money, wasted on something that didn't need to exist in the first place.

Another atmospheric, stylish and anti-climatic horror from West. I like it well enough, but it doesn't exactly rock my world. Maybe with the next one.

Bonus points for keeping the tension going (though it is often defused with weird deviations into flippancy), but to what end? I would love to see the team that created this film to challenge themselves in creating a film whose narrative matches its technical prowess.

One of the best horror movies in ages. I haven't been so scared. The movie does not exploit the shock factor, but uses music and silence to gradually build up the tension.
