I feel rather let down by "The Italian Job". I was expecting Caine to a deliver a suave performance, but he barely got a chance. I was expecting a clever plot and a quick, concise screenplay. I got a mostly boring film that dragged a bit. I was expecting an excellent, rip-roaring British Mod score. I got something akin to the Benny Hill theme. It's not a particularly bad film, it just lets itself down so often. The cinematography is stunning, however, and is the sole reason I would recommend it.
Car stunts and chases is the reason why this film can be considered a classic. Narrative is a total mess. It seems to me that everyone making this film had too much fun themselves, not caring about the viewers. The ending is probably the most abrupt and untimely ever.
You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off !! Classic film which created some of film's most iconic imagery not least the mini escape through the streets of Turin.
Michael Caine is very good in this film. Caine is the main reason to watch as most of the supporting cast are not given much to do. There are some fun car chases and the movie definitely has a 60's look.
Just about entertaining enough for me to sort of forget the worst "classic" plots I've ever seen ("Hey guys, they're moving a load of money in Italy!" "Sweet, let's steal it!" "Shit, I forgot, we can't steal it cos the courier's route is guarded by a fancy computer system, and we don't know anything about computers!" "Hey, I saw a computer genius on TV the other night, he's all clever and stuff, he'd be able to help us!"). Caine isn't even that good
Top badass moment? The Minis in the sewer pipe, the Minis on the dam, the Minis on the steps, the Minis in the shopping plaza, etc. Celebrating the best bit of British engineering since the Spitfire is badass; if you’re a Brit anyway. 3 cats and 0 decapitations. Enjoy the awesome cats-on-laps action, matched with some expertly written and delivered dialogue.
A charming, somewhat silly crime caper worth a watch mainly for the creativity of the choreographed car chases, and for the way it preserves the spirit of 60s Britain. On the flip side, unfortunately, the strain of British nationalism (arguably, xenophobia) running thoughout is a bit unsettling.
Wow I really expected better considering the fame of this film. Four fifths of the film is utterly boring. Then there are some nice driving shots during the final getaway, but as with Bullitt (1968) a few nice driving shots don't make up for an hour and fifteen minutes of horribly dull chit-chat. The ending is terrible. Didn't think I'd say this but the remake is actually better. Worst performance I've seen from Caine; his accent is particularly annoying in this film for some reason.
