Best to just watch all the good scenes on youtube. Good if you've got 90 minutes to kill though

I thought this was supposed to be funny.

Steve Martin's best. I almost named my dog Shithead, but realized not everybody would find it that funny.

Such a simple yet effective story, that leaves it open for so many hilarious gags.

Don't see the big deal being made about this and how Martin was supposed to be much better before. Unfunny.

The main escape hatch of Martin's stand-up routines is the schizoid way he switches from one persona to another, allowing him not just a sense of detachment from his own gags, but a sense of abandoning ship. His restriction here to a single personality, the adopted son of a black sharecropper, though scarcely consistent, and though bounced around a good deal by the shaggy-dog storyline, seems a bit like indentured servitude.
