The Joneses (2009)

Summary: Keeping up with the Joneses (Demi Moore, David Duchovny, Amber Heard and Ben Hollingsworth) is next to impossible, considering they're a family with good looks, fancy cars, a sprawling estate -- and a shocking secret the neighbors would never guess. Gary Cole, Glenne Headly and Lauren Hutton co-star in this smart drama about the dark side of a material world from writer-director Derrick Borte.

It's actually a fantastic concept, but they had difficulty meshing the tones of absurdity, comedy, romance, and dark drama that they tried to establish, which makes it fall apart somewhat during the conclusion.

An intriguing premise, a solid cast, but there are no repercussions for anything that happens. Daughter almost breaks up a marriage; nothing comes of it. Son almost kills a girl; nothing comes of it. Husband inadvertently causes a dude to kill himself; nothing comes of it. There's a pretty good idea for a movie here, but that's all there is. The execution, when it isn't lacking altogether, simply doesn't make any sense, and the tacked-on happy ending rings false in just about every way.

Interesting film, and decent enough to be enjoyed. I found the film was not thrilling to watch, but it did get me thinking about the logic behind our behaviour around the things we own. Its a nice insight into some modern day dillemas.

Any potential provided by the concept quickly disappears in this poorly-written, chemistry-devoid effort that runs a few bland sub-plots before petering out into nothing. Duchovny does his best to carry the film, and Cole and Headly perform well in their roles as the neighbours, but at no point do you care about the fate of any of the characters. Bizarrely, there doesn't even seem to be a climax to the main story, it all coming across like an idea brainstorm rather than a finished movie.

I didn't hate this but it could have been a lot better. It did do a good job showing the neurosis of anyone in sales and how people are treated as walking dollar signs when it comes to marketing. Reminds of why I no longer work in sales... you truly must be a soulless capitalist. Oh god... retail flashbacks ahhhhhhhhh.

In theory this film's clever exaggeration of marketing culture examines its pitfalls, and calls on us to rise above its nefarious influence. In practice this is an affectless mess that draws superficial attention to the morals of marketing and the unremarkable point that it may, in fact, be pervasive and evil, a conclusion most children could grasp in a matter of minutes. It is ironic that the film itself was made by an industry that relies on the same herding that it laments.

Great premise, okay execution. Would have benefited from tapping into a darker vein. Imagine this being filtered through the brain of Solondz? Solid performances can't hide the fact that the vain consumerism that the couple next door - and society - are caught in is the most interesting point. The theme of the capitalist system feeding on itself and spitting out corpses left and right (i bet you can't tell my political persuasion!) is not explored through a glass (sufficiently) darkly.

Cool premise, with the delicious irony that there is heavy product placement going on here: "Hey, we're sophisticated enough to satirize our own marketing!" Moore's casting is inspired. But the happy ending glosses over the implications of rampant consumerism, and I kept wishing Neil LaBute was at the helm. Also, I got a giggle from the use of Stella "Wifebeater" Artois as the aspirational beer of choice.

At the end Steve Jones tried to show human side of marketing, but all he achieved was weakness. He is the blankest character in that extraordinary family, where all modern cliches emerged. Nevertheless, the idea is appreciated among us, slightly paranoid kin.

It doesn't pursue its subversive premise as far as it should, but The Joneses benefits from its timely satire of consumer culture -- as well as a pair of strong performances from David Duchovny and Demi Moore.

Enjoyable satire with a great - and original - premise. Duchovny, Moore and Cole are all very good and the only thing holding the movie back is that it isn't quite dark or edgy enough.

For what the film is, I thought it was enjoyable. There is a strong underlying tone which I felt was good. I would have preferred the ending to be slightly different though. My only main complaint was that none of the camera angles were stable, which was annoying. Oh, and Amber Heard - could anyone be more attractive?

Good film. Original premise, well written, well acted. Should have been darker though. I would have liked to see in greater detail the lengths different neighbors would go to, just to keep up. Also, the insidious and subversive nature of materialism in our society was not explored nearly enough.

Duchovny finally hits his big screen stride as a sophisticated charmer in a movie about product placement where the subject matter probably financed the film.
