Summary: Work pressures cause a single mother moves to China with her young son; in his new home, the boy embraces karate, taught to him by a master of the self-defense form.
Not a bad effort when everything suggested that this was a bad idea (like the fact that they do Kung Fu and not Karate.) At the end of the day "wax on, wax off" is still in the pop culture lexicon and this version will drift out of consciousness. Jaden Smith impressed, but this movie is seriously lacking in a 'You're the Best Around' montage. I also found it slightly disturbing to watch kids who looked this young beat up on each other.
As with so many others here, I wanted to hate the hell out of this movie and sat down in front of it with the express purpose of making fun of it. Turns out, it's actually pretty good.
Terrible remake. The kid is annoying, and the story isn't as sweet and engaging as the originals. Despite the flaws of the original it is still clearly the better movie.
Jackie Chan does KUNG FU! I love a movie that lies to you in the title. Neither Chan or Smith actually bombs, but none of them excel either. Not a bad movie, but should probably never have been made.
Not really a remake, the Karate Kid tries to mess with the formula of the original movie and yet it tries to hit all of the same beats. It just doesn't work.
The kid's acting was annoying at the begining of the film, and the training scenes were a gimme, but the jacket thing was pretty good. The fight in the tournament was pretty amazing all except the backflip kick to win (yeah right!).
Like most, I went into this expecting and wanting to dislike it, but it's actually quite good. For being nearly two-and-a-half hours long, it goes by pretty fast and I don't think there was a single time that I found myself bored or disinterested.
Too much filler. The attempted kid romance was pointless, and I couldn't really get past Smith's sub-par acting, or the film's overall poor dialogue. He didn't seem to fit the part, and I think this story should have stayed a high school one to begin with. I did enjoy that it stayed some-what close to the original though, and I enjoyed some of the training scenes. The shaky fight scenes were annoying and unrealistic, especially for a bunch of 12 year olds. But overall, it's a good kid's movie.
A very pleasant surprise. I really didn't think I was going to care fo rit and when I seen the run time, I was hesitant on watching this, but still decided to give it a chance. It was nice to see Jackie Chan do something different and I thought he was brilliant in this. Jaden Smith was better than expected, even though at times he came across as annoying. The fight scenes seemed more brutal and the scenery was beautiful to look at. If you are on the fence about this one, it is worth a look.
Chan is good. Now the rest. The script writers wrote a script for Will Smith, then chucked it to his kid. The main characters are a couple of years too young. It should be called The Montage Kid. It looks good, like I say Chan does well, and it does have its moments but it's not a patch on The Karate Kid (84)
