Sterling Hayden is awesome in this movie, an essential noir-heist hybrid with a brilliantly constructed narrative.

Light on the Kubrick touch, but a very watchable little film noir. Not a perfect movie, but a really good one. Kubrick's eye as a still photographer definitely works to his advantage here, some of the lighting setups and compositions are fantastic. Also the fractured narrature structure is interesting, and bonus points for one hell of an evil femme fatale and just a hint of homosexual subtext.

Early signs of Kubrick's brilliant directing skill. Tightly filmed sequences & thought-provoking dialogue with a compelling overlapping narrative that gives multiple perspectives of the events leading up to the heist. Comments on the power of fate/irony over planning and scheming make for an introspective noir. Not as iconoclastic as future Kubrick, but each quick look into the lives of folks involved in the robbery plot make it much more convincing by giving each character an authentic story.

A very well-crafted noir that relies on an airtight structure and story to carry tension throughout, as well as Sterling Hayden's dominant presence. It's a lot looser and fast-paced than just about any other Kubrick movie you'll see but it has its share of heavy moments. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt and bordering on anticlimactic, but other than that there's really no significant complaints to be made.

Sterling Hayden provides a great performance as Johnny Clay, and Kubrick's cinematography is well done for the era. Real memorable heist scene, but I'm still not sure if I really enjoyed the ending. Either way, The Killing is a must for any fan of noir or Kubrick.

This movie is alright, but not incredible. The heist is well orchestrated, but not particularly gripping, and hurried character development results in bland characters. The narration feels heavy handed and distracts from the action on the screen. There are some wonderful moments, such as the whirlwind of money toward the end of the film, but they are too few, and the experience is underwhelming, and a bit too preachy. I was expecting for a lot from Kubrick, and feel let down by the result.

Stanley Kubrick had a debut film to knock your eyes out. It stills does the trick, with a grinding voice-over commentary and lovely little switchback flashbacks. The Killing is extremely cut-and-dried. Kubrick knows luck or chance about as well as he knows true love or warmth in a woman. But the panache of the film is irresistible. It's only after a good dose of guys like Johnny that your understand why and how the only people Kubrick ever trusted were flat-out crazies, like Jack Torrance.

Strikingly structured heist movie may have lost some of its novelty value in the wake of its imitators, but still presents a teasing narrative which keeps the viewer on the back foot until the climax when all threads are tightly drawn together. Kubrick's controlled direction is served well by his cast of colorful characters; the film is also highlighted by uproarious fight sequence featuring real-life wrestler Kwariani. A solid harbinger of things to come from Kubrick.

"The Killing" showcases Kubrick's continued evolution as a filmmaker. The story is solid, and the cast is very good. The narrative structure is initially a bit disorienting but, once the players and the stakes are established, it's an exciting ride.

first part is not brilliant but the second (climax) is great and Kubrick's montage apperently influenced Tarantino (Jackie Brown). don't forget Reservoir Dogs (mexican standoff) and The Dark Knight with Johnny's mask. surely one of the best heist movies ever made. with best ending. what a finale...

Very entertaining film noir. Some of the acting is pretty lousy and Kubrick's photography style isn't as prevalent (there is still a few amazing shots) but the story and the way its told is very intriguing.

Recently I revisited The Killing (1956), and I liked it a lot more than I previously did. The line "It isn't fair. I never had anybody but you. Not a real husband. Not even a man. Just a bad joke without a punch line" is a new favorite of mine, and its brutal irony and unwavering willingness to plumb the depths of human desperation makes it one of the more well regarded film noirs.
