Develops in a somewhat formulaic but very touching manner, as they navigate through a series of misfortunes. The performances are quite endearing. I really enjoyed the cultural details, the frequent use of metaphor in dialogue and the role of Buddhist religion and superstition. Frankly I didn't find Wang's art all that intriguing, but I enjoyed the cross-dresser's opera scenes. Nitpicks: the music was kinda cheeseball, and the use of slo-mo at the climax was a groaner. Overall, an engaging film.

Nearing the end of his life, Wang -- a locally renowned street performer and wizard of the venerable art of mask magic -- yearns to pass on his technique. But custom prescribes that he can only hand down his craft to a male successor. Anxious to preserve his unique art, the heirless Wang buys an impoverished 8-year-old on the black market. When the child divulges a dreaded secret, Wang faces a choice between filial love and societal tradition.
