Equal parts horror, comedy, and cheese and I loved every minute. The final ten minutes are a real doozy.

After every episode, I felt like I could finally establish how I felt about it, but I never could. I would find myself laughing at how cheesy it was, while being genuinely creeped out. Some of the graphics and effects are cringe-worthy, and yet the whole is beautifully shot. I guess it's cliche to say so, but it really is the only series I've seen like Twin Peaks. I was entirely disoriented, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Half horror half folk comedy, Trier's Kingdom hospital is inhabited with magnificantly peculiar creatures, living as well as dead, all in pursuit of bizarre goals, all projects that will somehow go devlishly awry. Easily the best Danish tv-series since "Matador", a statement that would equally please and disgust Lars Trier.

How is it exactly that you can make Udo Kier weirder than he already is? The only thing missing in this series is a talking anteater.

If all the TV series were like this, I wouldn't be calling myself Noam. My mommy would have been sad, and I wouldn't have a twin brother. At noon, I would look at the sky, searching for clouds to remind me of my lost twin brother, instead of finding them, I would draw shapes on the husky sand. Teachers would be surrounding me, and I, as the one who never learnt how to write, would start weeping. "Trier" I would shout, there will be no answer.

One of Lars von Trier's best: a miniseries about life in a haunted hospital in Copenhagen, where restless ghosts, secret societies, and petty rivalries proliferate: von Trier keeps it up for four and a half hours with his customary fleet-mindedness. It's one of his best scripts, overflowing with wonderful dialogue (How can you not love the catchphrase "Danish scum!"?); the cast is uniformly superb, with Ernst-Hugo Jaregard as the cantankerous chief surgeon taking top honors. Essential viewing.

Infinitely better than everything else I've seen by von Trier. It's kind of like if Twin Peaks was a hospital drama and it went balls out with its zaniness and violence. The characters are all fantastic, especially Ernst-Hugo Järegård's character Stig Helmer. The plot expertly weaves together numerous subplots seamlessly, and there's not one boring second in the series's 4+ hour length. On top of that, there's a great sense of humor throughout that's occasionally laugh-out-loud funny.

A daring, overwhelming synthesis of satire, horror, black comedy, and ensemble drama, von Trier's The Kingdom is a highly underrated masterwork of cinema that all too often falls victim to the poor reputation of its its aged presentation or its slow pace, but the former is a negligible flaw avoided by skipping the opening and closing segments of each episode, and the latter is not only a part of the satire, but also barely noticeable as a negative when the work is appreciated as a whole.

This first series was a bit disappointing; while there are tastes of the frantic insanity of the second series, it's not too far from a bland, generic horror. Too much time seems to be spent not setting up future plot points or developing character or atmosphere, but simply padding out the hour. Still, combined with Kingdom II, the total package is definitely worth watching.

I don't know if I've ever felt a movie was weird for the sake of weird until I saw two mentally handicapped characters washing dishes and speaking in cypher, acting as some sort of demented anchor to Lars Von Trier's The Kingdom. Are those scenes needed? I think I can fairly say "no". Yet, the rest of the movie is so audaciously insane, the images so shocking, that one can't help get sucked in to the world and it's batshit inhabitants.

Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was a little disappointed. I found the setting and most of the characters really interesting, but the incongruous tone and odd pacing made for stretches, especially in the middle two episodes where I just didn't care. Things came together a bit in the last episode but I much preferred the character interactions and the eerie comedy than the more in your face supernatural horror that increasingly takes center stage.

Great hospital drama/supernatural comedy that meanders at a perfect pace, investing our interest in every single character in the hospital. Twin Peaks fans should make sure they catch this.

After a good first episode and two brilliant episodes, Von Trier manages to make an awful finish to the series, dropping the score with at least 10 points. Why did he try to be funny there?
