An enjoyable blend of sparkling dialogue and hilarious slapstick, sexually provocative and with very strong feminine sympathies. The simultaneous seduction and humiliation of Fonda's character gives Stanwyck most of the power and weight. Both are excellent in their gradually shifting roles.

Good film for a lazy afternoon. Nothing great here. Few laughs. Good writing. Stanwyck looks good. But nothing much except that.. a forgettable flick. The writing / character development doesn't sketch much depth. After touching good levels and hinting of greatness it just falls flat.

Stanwyck and Fonda have good chemistry. This is a well-written, thoroughly enjoyable comedy. The wedding night scene--in which her every imaginary account of an early love affair is followed by an image of a train hurtling through the rainy dark--is hilarious.

Hectic romantic farce, the first to show its director's penchant for mixing up sexual innuendo, funny men and pratfalls. There are moments when the pace drops, but in general it's scintillating entertainment, especially after viewing its weak remake _The Birds and the Bees_.

The Lady Eve is a brilliant comedy from Sturges that manages to also be romantic. Sturges uses lengthy shots in certain key scenes to build tension and anticipation, most notably between Jean and Pike early in their courtship. Fonda and Stanwyck are excellent, the former for his adapting to such a screwball role, the latter for her winning way as the con-artist. The film is also filled to the brim with excellent supporting characters, none better than the always reliable Eugene Pallette.

They just don't make em like this anymore. Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda should have done every movie together. This was Preston Sturges' first film, and what a coming out he had. Pure fun.

I've been kicking this around in my head for a while. It's not that I don't like old comedies; I love Chaplin and Marx Brothers films. It's not that I don't like romantic movies. I'm a sap, and some of my favourite movies are unabashedly romantic. It's romantic comedies from the 40s and 50s that I can't stand, and for a while now I've been trying to figure out why. The best I can come up with is that they're not particularly funny or romantic. They're trying to be all things to all people.

Utterly delightful. You have to be willing to buy into the ludicrous plot, but that's easy enough to do when the dialogue is so excellently written, the characters are so charmingly played and the chemistry between Fonda and Stanwyck is so potent.

Enjoyable opening 30 minutes or so but from there it's just a predictable downward spiral of boredom. If this is the best Preston Sturges has to offer it'll be awhile until I bother with another one of his films.
