I'll try and fit in my hate in 500 characters but there's no way I can get it all in. So forgive me if I miss something and the shouting. That said, THIS IS THE MOST INCOMPETENT FILM I'VE EVER SEEN. The story is hopelessly mangled and garbled. You can drive a truck through the plot holes - I even stopped the film at once to complain about the "trapping Magneto in a scrapyard" level of dumb, only to have Aang point this out TO THE VILLAGERS THEMSELVES. And I'm not even a fan of the cartoon. Gods

This movie is nowhere near as bad as critics and fans panned it to be. Its definitely aimed towards children, and with child actors can be a bit wooden. The story seems pretty standard and non threatening but in no way was I ever confused as to what was happening or what a characters motivations were. Still for the budget and obvious effort spent in the shots it should have been better.

This movie is...bad. Yes, it turns out the critically lambasted, unbelievably expensive special effects demo is indeed as stupid and boring as everyone has already said it is. There's more than a helping of typically uninspired, ugly green-screen Industrial Light & Magic CGI, with which the child actors who lead the picture struggle to integrate themselves, and the script is awful and inorganic. Oh, Shyamalan of the immortal Unbreakable days, where hast thou hidden, and will you ever return?

i never watched, cared, or even thought about the series so when it comes to continuity i haven't a clue. taking it on it's own it's not a bad movie, the effects are good, the plot is childish, but bearable. the most disappointing aspect is that this movie is so abbreviated from what i assume is shyamalan attempting to fit plot points in from a show fifteen times as long, but ends up making it unnatural and contrived. perhaps if the obviously intended sequel is made it'll go somewhere.

The amount of explanation and re-explanation regarding every single plot point within this movie only leads me to believe that M. Night Shyamalan made this movie for people with anterograde amnesia (the condition Guy Pearce had in Memento).

Trying to shove an entire season's worth of plot into a film less than two hours? Yeah, like that would work. The action scenes are so poorly staged, it's like M. Night watched Children of Men and failed to realize that choreography is essential to long takes. Bad acting certainly doesn't help. I haven't seen the series but this didn't turn me off to it, since it's obvious even to me how much has been chopped out, and it's not an accurate representation of the original.

The story is so rehashed and plain, and the movie generally lacks in enchantment (this is a big problem, especially considering that it's a fantasy film). The 3D visuals barely justify only watching the giant wave bit. Overall: You require severely limited film experience to enjoy this.

Really disappointing. Too much was just a live action version of the series, but left out too much for the story and the weight of the conflict to be interesting. This first book of the series should have been at least 2 3-hour movies to do it justice. Such a shame.

I did not find it as bad as my PSI says it is. Having watched the original, this film was done well. Going from 10+ hours of material to a little under 2 and keeping the heart of the story without any 'huh' moments is no easy feat. I didn't have much problem with the cast, sure the brother and sister weren't the best actors, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the film. Think there's so much hate for the film because it's Shyamalan and because of a white Aang.

Another sloppy attempt to cash in on popularity. Tried to cram 12 and a half hours of cartoon into a 1 and a half hour long live-action movie. Too much was cut out, focus was on special effects, names were mispronounced, and M Night Shyamalan didn't throw in a twist. The only redeeming factor was the fight sequences, and there were only 3.

I don't know what's worse, the acting or the script. The fight scenes are especially disappointing and a waste of perfectly good CGI. Not recommend. [Rifftrax lacks any real zingers and almost seems to choke on the sheer volume of potential material: where to start?]

I'm a huge Shyamalan fan but this was terrible at so many levels. I've never watched the TV-Series but the story sounded good yet the movie feels so rushed at all times and the characters are terribly underdeveloped (maybe with the exception of Toub and Patel who act defiantely against a horrible script). The special effects look totally out of place, the sets look cheap and the action scenes are laughingly bad. The only saving graces are the two mentioned actors and the beautiful score by JNH

Incomprehensibly bad. Incompetent on every possible level. The special effects are bad and the movie looks ugly. The direction is clunky and sucks the energy out of every scene. Ignoring the ethnicity problem, the performances are laughable, though to be fair, I don't think anyone could deliver what might be some of the worst most awkwardly expository dialogue ever written. It only get the single point so I can make it clear that it's still somehow better than Lady in the Water.

Given how amazing the milieu of Avatar is in its Nickelodeon form it's a real pity M. Night Shyamalan got his hands on this. The child acting is predictably bad, the portrayal of all the evil characters as Indian is a bit problematic (but it's okay because the director is Indian, get it?!?!?), and there's no tension in any of the action scenes, most of which end way too quickly.
