It's a nice way to pass the time with some laughs and some poignant moments. The writing, acting and direction are all pretty good, but I don't see anything particularly special or memorable here.

Ninety-some odd minutes of Jack Nicholson chewing scenery and acting caaaaa-RAZEEE, while Otis Young's character routinely jeopardizes a valued career, just to keep the plot moving along. Gritty scenery aside, realistic this movie ain't. That said, Randy Quaid really delivers in a tough role, the leads all have great chemistry and the spotlight Ashby shines on Naval bureaucracy is a harsh one.

I see the merits of this film. It's funny and genuine, has a slight anti-authoritarian bent to it, and good performances. But it's one of those American movies from the late 60's/early 70's that just sort of vaguely exists. Harold and Maude may be too hokey and life-affirming, but at least it has a point of view. So while there's nothing I disliked about this movie, there was nothing I could latch onto enough to love, either. I just didn't get much out of it, although I enjoyed it enough.

One of the best films of the seventies. An example to us all of how to create a small, intimate motion picture -- two simple men, who are far from saintly, decide to show kindness and compassion to a messed-up third man. Why? Well... just because. Excellent off-color dialogue throughout, often funny, ultimately moving. Not a false note in the whole shootin' match. Bravo, bravo, bravo

My first Ashby film and, as Criminal5 put it, what a breath of fresh air! The Last Detail is a bittersweet slice of life that's just as relevant today as it was almost 40 years ago.

A movie a bit forgotten, but definitely a great road movie. A perfect combination of excitement, sadness, humor, friendship and rebellion. And still there's Jack Nicholson, bringing the film to something else.

Likable, complex characters taking realistic courses of action when confronted with an ambiguous and indifferent world. That's what I took away from this. The subtext was completely wasted on me as I know next to nothing about the navy -- and I could tell this was probably very important -- but I liked this movie on the few levels I was able to appreciate it at.

Robert Towne, Hal Ashby and Jack Nicholson? Sounds like a recipe for success. Quaid compliments Jack superbly in this film, loved his vulnerability. The script flows very well but it should be expected with Towne writing it. So many classic scenes, should be better known.

one more of those critically acclaimed movies that i was completely oblivious about until watching. it only deserves a small portion of it's praise. quaid looks really REALLY young. there's really not too much to say about this movie, you can read into that: nothing bad to say.

Ah, the 70's. The Golden Age of Jack Nicholson's career. The relationship with these three guys is what makes this movie so great. You love the group, but know that they still have to do their job in the end. The end is good because it doesn't stoop to anything cliche. It's purely genuine. The performances in this movie are great. I recommend this film

A brilliant buddy movie that turns into a sort of late coming-of-age or initiation film. Enjoyable, authentic and with the right amount of deep humanism and furious social and political angst that could only be found in american films in that golden era circa 1973.

A fantastic movie, moving, profound, deceptively simple. Hal Ashby was a great filmmaker, but never has he captured life onto film so exquisitely as in The Last Detail. Along with Chinatown, this is one of two Robert Towne scripts that rank among the most perfect in all of Hollywood history. Nicholson's Bedesky certainly has to be one of the most compelling characters ever written for cinema.

It's a shame that this type of 70s realism went out the door for the most part, because films like this are a breath of fresh air whenever I watch them. It's not that profound or hard-hitting, it's just a pleasant, quiet film that doesn't overexert itself and manages to be moving and amusing. Nicholson, as always, is the high point of the film, but it also boasts a very strong screenplay that gives the actors room to work with.
