This film has another great performance by Paul Newman. It is not the best western but there are plenty of good moments. Watch for a very young James Best.

newman portrays billy the kid as a morally grey hero even though he really wasn't much of a hero in any way. i can't blame hollywood for making him a good guy, because a bad guy wouldn't had made much money in the 50's. it's not bad, but i've seen better.

Mannered, eccentric. Maybe it would have been better with its original Billy the Kid, James Dean. As it is, it just seems like a bad western made by a second-rate French New Wave director.
