Parts of it seem a little dated and stuffy, as if the 'importance' of the film precludes it from having energy outside of speeches. Still, while it lacks some spark the film is still enjoyable and easy to get into. The performances are pretty good for the time, the story is very interesting and all around it's an enjoyable and informative time.

Paul Muni was excellent.

A biopic from the 30s sounds frighteningly dry, right? Not so. It has an interesting plot and Muni's memorable performance is highly convincing.

Muni gives an amazing performance here, but everything else (especially the direction) is too weak to forgive.

The acting, if rather old-fashioned, is good. Still, there's something stuffy, pretentious and irritating about how seriously it takes itself.
