THE LIGHTSHIP, while intriguing, doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It's a thriller that isn't that thrilling, a think-piece that isn't that thought-provoking, and a coming-of-age story for a character who doesn't do that much coming of age. The script and direction are both pretentious and lacking in drive. Robert Duvall hams it up (and is fun to see), Michael Lyndon is utterly bland as the comer-of-age, and the rest are either bland or hammy. But there are some memorably weird moments.
