Brahm creates an excellent atmosphere for the film. The story is basically a chain of flashbacks that unravel, revealing the effects Day's character has had on a series of men. This is probably the most interesting part of the film, as it presents layers of unreliable narration forcing the viewer to piece together a puzzle while being aware important parts are missing. Day's strange presence works for the film, and though the ending is clumsy the build up was strong enough to hold it together.

It's presented almost like an anthology - with each flashback-within-a-flashback contributing to the film as a whole whilst also telling an individual story. The section with Mitchum was the most interesting, though; I enjoyed his character's disdain for the "parasitic rich". That must have been quite daring for the time. It does tie up a bit too neatly at the end, but overall it's an enjoyable drama with some wonderful visual flourishes.

Compelling psychological melodrama with Brahm's usual dazzling visual style. The main problem is the ending. It ties everything up with a lot of silly mumbo-jumbo and it ruins the wonderful "unreliable narrator" possibilities of the film's structure of layered flashbacks. However, Day gives a great performance, Mitchum is always fun to watch, the music and especially the camerawork are first-rate, and the film is engaging. A more open-ended conclusion would have helped.
