The most cliche presentation of Irish "Bless me lucky charms" hogwash I ever saw. Accurately portrays the American perception of the Irish as happy go lucky fools. Thankfully the boozing image was omitted. Especially irritating as it is advertised as being "based" on a "real person".

Exists in the same Ford realm as How Green Was My Valley, but comes out smelling sweeter...somehow.

Another fantastic mid-50's film from John Ford. While it has more than its fair share of sentiment, it's done so beautifully, with such structural precision that I can't help but admire the film. Here is the story of a man who, over a lifetime, willingly gives up his freedom to serve others through the military, and Ford reveals the beauty and the stability of a flawed institution, one that bids men and women to give their lives for something greater than themselves.
