Summary: Ben Quick arrives in Frenchman's Bend, MS after being kicked out of another town for allegedly burning a barn for revenge. Will Varner owns just about everything in Frenchman's Bend and he hires Ben to work in his store. Will thinks his own son, Jody, who manages the store, lacks ambition and despairs of him getting his wife, Eula, pregnant. Will thinks his daughter, Clara, a schoolteacher, will never get married. He decides that Ben Quick might make a good husband for Clara to bring some new blood into the family. (imdb)

Why is it that when Hollywood looks at Faulkner it sees Tennessee Williams? Welles hams it up, and Newman tries to make it through on cold blue eyes and sweaty sexuality alone. Only Angela Lansbury seems to know what this is about, and that in itself is not enough. Martin Ritt provides his usual lacklustre direction.

Paul Newman wanders in and disrupts an already dysfunctional family. Though there are some clever exchanges of dialogue and many sexual implications, I felt this was a bit dated. I disliked the near-caricaturization of the South, and most of the acting was pretty weak. The exception and highlight is Orson Welles, playing a particularly despicable brute who dominates an entire town and its people.

THE LONG, HOT SUMMER boasts a fantastic cast: Paul Newman (who won Best Actor at Cannes), Joanne Woodward, Anthony Franciosa, Lee Remick, and Angela Lansbury. They're all as good as you'd expect, but one co-star outshines them all: Orson Welles, as the local baron Will Varner. Bloated and gray, boisterous, imperious, and semi-coherent, Welles is great fun to watch, and single-handedly makes the film worthwhile; the script and direction meander a bit, but are likewise worthy, as is the score.

Standard southern melodrama elevated by its cast; Newman and Woodward have electric chemistry together; Welles does his best Burl Ives impression and Lansbury is fine (if fleeting) as an unlikely love interest for Welles. Jazzy Alex North score and unusually provocative dialogue at times is hampered somewhat by echoes of better films with similar subject matter (HOT TIN ROOF comes immediately to mind).

Sort of like a less stagy Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, which would be a good thing, except it's marred by an ending that goes to ridiculous lengths to tie up all the loose ends. Welles is fantastic and the otherwise so-so film completely comes to life everytime he's on screen. There's sadly a few too many things working against him, not least Woodwards wooden performance (pardon the lameness, but that's the only word that truly covers it) and the fact that nothing here feels like Faulkner.

Not what you'd call great Faulkner; it's actually closer to Tennessee Williams. Orson Welles has really odd makeup, and the movie's ending is so happy it's creepy. But it's an entertaining film.
