What lies beneath its moments of beauty and heart is only the feeling that we are seeing a copy. It's Darabont trying to be Capra. It's Jim impersonating Jimmy Stewart. Actually, he has a very good imitation of this guy. But it's on YouTube, not in The Majestic.

Darabont narrowly avoids making the film stodgy and overblown, and instead delivers yet another fantastic slice of cinema. It's surprising how well Jim Carrey can act in a straight role, and his turn as a leading man is just part of what makes this film well worth a watch (even if it is, perhaps, a little bit on the long side).
