I can barely remember this movie, except that Mel's acting didn't totally put me off. It was okay, I guess?

I remember it as a solid film but I think I'm giving out a couple of nostalgia-points here.

For some reason, numerous big stars wanted to be in a teacher movie after the success of _Dead Poets Society_. This is yet another one that's not bad, but also nothing about which to write home

Heart-felt movie.

A generic and cliched "older mentor with demons of his own helps younger, troubled kid, and they learn and benefit from one another" story. It's not a completely worthless subgenre by itself, but this picture takes things in the most predictable, unrealistic, and saccharine sweet direction possible. I'll give credit to the cast for a good performance, especially from Gibson himself, but it's still just mediocre.

The story is full of good feelings, but as one sits there it all seems so predictable that you can't help but ask the point of it all.

Familiar as it feels it is pretty slick and has pretty good performances from Gibson and a young Nick Stahl.

Mel Gibson's small directorial debut is sturdy enough to hit some of the right emotional chords. It doesn't move much beyond that, however.
